Michael read for the degrees of M.Phil (by thesis) and D.Phil at the University of Oxford. His doctoral thesis, “The Defence of Disimpoverishment”, was later published as book by Hart Publishing under the title “The Defence of Passing On”. After completing his studies in England, Michael returned to Australia where he worked as an associate to the Hon Justice K M Hayne in the High Court of Australia, following which he signed the roll of counsel and is now practising at the Victorian Bar. Michael also teaches Trust Law at the University of Melbourne, where he is a senior fellow.
