The Wingate Scholarship allowed me to complete a significant part of my research on Ancient Italy, which has now been incorporated into my book, ‘Inside Ancient Lucania: Dialogues in History and Archaeology’, (London 2007). On completion of my doctorate I worked as a temporary lecturer at Birmingham and then University College London. Since 2002 I have been at University of Exeter, and am now a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Classics and Ancient History. The Italian peninsula is still the core of my research but it is also more than that. The different methods required for studying its history, incorporating textual and material evidence and various models, has meant drawing on numerous fields. Hence in the wider context I am keen to promote work across disciplines and currently co-direct an Interdisciplinary Research Network on Migrations. My interests also include the history of Ancient Youth, and ideas of belonging and homeland.
