I was awarded a scholarship in June 2003 to complete my PhD in 'English Gauged Brickwork:Historical Development and Future Practice, to prepare a small-scale masterpiece of gauged brickwork, to investigate and demonstrate 18th century craft skills and techniques. I was also interested in the sampling and analysis of brickearths, clays used in the production of the rubbing bricks used to determine their mineralogical nature, manufacture, properties and characteristics.

I gained my Doctorate from De Montfort University, Leicester, in September 2004. Elsevier Science and Technology, London, published my thesis in autumn 2007. I continue to act as a Consultant and Educator on an international level and have had several peer-reviewed papers published. In 2006 I was honoured by the Commonwealth of Kentucky with the title of 'Kentucky Colonel'. I have delivered keynote addresses to audiences on modern craft education and training, and lectured on several aspects of my craft in Ireland, USA and Sweden.
