I was a Wingate Scholar in 1991, the year after I left university. The Wingate Foundation generously funded me to work as an unpaid intern at Human Rights Watch in New York. During my time at Human Rights Watch, I worked principally on Romania and Albania, conducting research, writing reports and assisting in preparation for the first NGO human rights mission to Albania. I also took part myself in a fact-finding mission to Romania, which resulted in the publication of a report on the treatment of those arrested following demonstrations.

My time at Human Rights Watch inspired me to train as a barrister and to specialise in human rights law. I now work as a London-based barrister, and most of my cases include human rights, EU or public law issues. I have kept up my links to the NGO world, and take on cases or conduct training, trial observations and missions for groups including JUSTICE, Liberty, the Kurdish Human Rights Project and the European Human Rights Advisory Centre
