I had already published my first novel THE LAST GIRL (Black Swan 1995) and needed time and space to follow it with a second - difficult because my two daughters were very small. The scholarship allowed me to pay for childcare, and I finished FREEZING, (Black Swan, 1997) as a result. I have since published four novels, the latest being SAVING GRACE (Allison and Busby, July 2007).
Between books, I have freelanced, writing articles ranging from the serious - Greek and Roman archaeology for the Sunday Times Magazine; to the not so serious - reviewing health spas on a weekly basis for The Sunday Telegraph. The novels have appeared in the US and in translation elsewhere.
