After almost twenty years of work in the field of Traveller Education I was looking for a period of reflection and research. The award of a Wingate Scholarship in1997 helped me to take a year’s unpaid leave of absence and my book, ‘Traveller Children- A Voice for Themselves’, published by Jessica Kingsley in 1999, was the major result. I returned to work greatly refreshed and with new ideas for developing my work.
Back as Head of the Devon Consortium Traveller Education Service I also served for two years on the Government’s Advisory Group for Raising Ethnic Minority Achievement. In 2002 I went to Ethiopia to work as a Teacher Education Adviser in the Ministry of Education and stayed there for two years. Since my return to England I have co-authored another book on teachers in Traveller Education, published in 2007 by Trentham Books.
