Website: Visit (opens in a new window)I received a Wingate Scholarship to give me time to work on my first novel, Mary George of Allnorthover. It was published in 2001 and the French translation won the Prix du Premier Roman Etranger. Since then I have published a third book of poems, Minsk (2003), a second novel, An Irresponsible Age (2006), and a memoir, The Importance of Music to Girls (2007). I also write libretti and make radio programmes. I have been teaching at Goldsmiths College, University of London, and am now Professor of Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.
