The Wingate Scholarship enabled me to complete my PhD in Philosophy. My thesis was concerned to propose a theory of testimony; that is, to offer some account of what makes it reasonable to believe what other people say and to offer some account of what explains the knowledge that we can acquire by doing so. Central sections of this PhD were published in academic philosophy journals, including one in the Journal of Philosophy. On this basis I secured a temporary lectureship at the Department of Philosophy, University College, London and then a permanent position at the Department of Philosophy, University of Sheffield, where I am at present. I am writing a monograph on testimony, the central claims of which go back to the PhD the Wingate Scholarship helped me to finish.
