The initial award of the Wingate scholarship in 1999 allowed me to take unpaid leave from my employment and write up my PhD thesis ‘The London County Council Nursing Service 1929-1948’. I was awarded the degree in 2001. I have two publications from the thesis. (2002 Reciprocal Rewards: British Poor Law nursing and the campaign for State Registration International History of Nursing Journal 7,2 4-13; 2006 Splendid Scope for Public Service: leading the London County Council Service 1929-48 Nursing History Review 14 31-57.)

I have acknowledged the Wingate Foundation at the end of each article (and of course in the introduction to the thesis itself).

While researching for the thesis I found interesting material on tuberculosis nursing only some of which was directly relevant to the thesis, but which I was keen to explore. Two years after the award of my PhD I secured a post doctoral research fellowship at the University of the West of England, Bristol. I was able to undertake my project ‘Contact, contagion and communication: the role of the nurse in relation to tuberculosis (TB) 1930-1970’. I am now producing outputs from the study.
