The action principle allowed us to prove a duality between two manifestations of a unified force, called a gauge interaction, very similar to the duality between electricity and magnetism. What is interesting is that, although the duality is theoretically exact, it manifests itself in practice in quite different ways, just as in electromagnetism we see electrically charged particles (electrons) but not magnetically charged ones. Thus we are able to explain particles with similar properties but very different masses, the so-called generation puzzle. There are numerous publications in international journals and lecture notes.
I was editor with Jean-Pierre Francoise and Greg Naber of the ‘Encyclopaedia of Mathematical Physics’ published by Elsevier 2006 in 5 volumes.

In addition I organise a weekly seminar at Oxford on quantum field theory; I chair the committee for Developing Countries of the European Mathematical Society; I am on the Developing Countries Strategy Group of the International Mathematical Union; the Scientific Council of CIMPA, France and the French National Nonlinear Network. I am also on the International Affairs Committee of the London Mathematical Society.
